Bet on the appearance. In review today we have a Chuwi HiPad – a great tablet for $200 with competitive stuffing: touch FullHD+ screen, decategory Helio X27 processor, 3 GB RAM, and Android 8.0. For high-sounding titles and modern design is the performance level of state employees, but how good or bad business model let’s see in our review.

HiPad is a budget Android tablet from the Chinese manufacturer Huawei. Amid the countless competitors it stands out more or less fresh chipset MediaTek Helio X27 and rather rare aspect ratio of display is 16:10. This format will allow more conveniently to work on documents or view photos.

The main competitors of the 10-inch tablet (price to $200) we believe Lenovo Tab 4, Asus ZenPad 10, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and A Amazon Fire HD 10. A more powerful version of this tablet can be considered Hi9 Plus.

Design and features

Cheap Android tablets in recent times are getting better and better. Praise is possible and HiPad: front panel is covered with protective glass, aluminum case with slightly domed back but with chrome bevels and looks and features. Red stripes on the rear panels have become a signature feature Chuwi – they can also be found on the mini-PC Chuwi GBox. When twisting the tablet a little crackling, but not impossible. In General, the tablet was noticeably stronger than other representatives of its price range.

Wireless capabilities and navigation

This tablet has no GPS!

During our tests the built-in WiFi module tablet did not bring trouble. Interestingly, all the sellers in the characteristics of this model indicated the presence of a GPS, while on the official product page on the manufacturer’s website navigation module was never even mentioned. In reality, the tablet is GPS really missing – at least according to the test application.

Camera

The main camera of 5 MP makes blurry pictures with unnatural colors, even in normal daylight. In addition, it suffers from the same ills as the photosensors on cheap smartphones: the Peresvet, the presence of a pink haze in the pictures and the lack of stabilization.

Accessories and warranty:

Included with the tablet we found the warranty card, the tool to eject the microSD card, user manual, charger and USB cable Type-C. the model are warranted from the manufacturer for a period of one year.

Input device

Keyboard

Touch screen digitizer recognizes up to 10 simultaneous touches, but the accuracy is not always high. Even if you type on the virtual keyboard at a moderate speed, the errors are much more common norms. The delay is minimal, with web surfing and simple games.

Display:

Display with FullHD+ in this model has both positive and negative qualities. The picture is clear, the backlight is bright enough, contrast high, color rendition is quite good for its price. But the uniformity of illumination is poor. The response time of the display is also increased, especially given the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 and Huawei MediaPad lite M5 and is clearly visible in practice.

On the street the readability of images on the screen of the test tablet is worse than the opponents due to the fact that those higher backlight brightness.

Display: response time testℹ

Response time indicates how fast the display device is able to change the color of the image from one to another. Not fast enough response can lead to deformation of the movable parts of the image, the appearance of shadows and blur. The absence of such problems is especially important for watching movies and gaming.

This is a very large response time. The screen is clearly not aimed at games and similar applications.
For comparison, the best result among all known devices is equal to 0.8 of millisec., the worst – 240 millisec. “97% of the screens from our database showed a good result.
Thus, the device under test is in the lower half of the rating (it falls behind the average result, equal to 25.6 of millisec.)

This is a very large response time. The screen is clearly not aimed at games and similar applications.

Thus, the device under test is in the upper half of the rating (it is ahead of the average result, equal to 41 millisec.)

Some devices set the brightness of the screen, using a quick on-off of LEDs instead of a simple voltage to power them. This method is abbreviated as PWM (or PWM). It often leads to stripes or ripples in the image, as well as to rapid eye fatigue and headaches. We check whether you are using PWM in the DUT, and if so, under what conditions.

Yay! PWM is not detected
Stats: 52% of known devices does not use PWM to change the brightness, and among those where PWM is used, a typical frequency modulation is 9074 Hz (43 Hz min max 142900 Hz).

Performance

In HiPad as well as in Hi9 Plus, installed chipset Helio X27 and therefore performance in benchmarks they are similar. When compared with the Snapdragon 835, then the solution from Mediatek 20-25% behind in multi-core performance and 50% on graphics performance. Mid-range HiSilicon Kirin 960 also passes Helio X27 on the CPU and graphics performance. In practice, the backlog of more powerful devices becomes noticeable when running demanding games.

From a subjective point of view, the system works somehow too clipped: the brakes, then hang. Applications run with a noticeable delay, often have to click on the icon a second time to get something started.

Flicker Test

If you believe the figures in AndroBech, installed here drive 32 GB is noticeably inferior in speed to what is available on Chuwi Hi9 Plus (64 GB). Access speed to memory card is much higher and comparable to that of Galaxy Tab S4. According to the model specifications, maximum supported size microSD card is 128 GB.

Game

In games everything is very ambiguous. In Asphalt 9, for example, we observed the artifacts and problems displaying certain textures and strange somalinet. But perhaps the most negative point is a very unstable frame rate, to get smooth gameplay absolutely impossible. Thus less digestible, the result can be obtained only in less demanding projects, like Shadow Fight 3.

Most of the housing is heated in the part which is closer to the USB port – apparently that is where are located the motherboard. For high load we recorded values of up to 37 °C, the temperature of the opposite side of the case is only 23 °C.

The chipset was unable to hold the maximum frequency for a long time, as seen in the chart on the right. Generally, the rate is quite unstable.

Sound system

The built-in speaker lacks bass and maximum volume. As seen in the AFR in a certain range there is some balance, but in General linearity is not enough. The lower part of the tablet body resonates a bit at maximum volume.

Power consumption and Autonomous operation

Energy efficiency HiPad also loses to rivals. Idle consumption ranges from 2.7 to 5.6 watts depending on the brightness of the backlight. For comparison, the Lenovo Tab 10 Plus 4, the average is 1.2 to 4 watts. When you play a video the tablet requires 7 watts and under maximum load of 12 watts of power.

The autonomy of the tablet is average even with the battery on the 7000 mAh. Users can expect 10 hours of active Wi-Fi included – like the Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus.

The autonomy of the tablet is average even with the battery on the 7000 mAh. Users can expect 10 hours of active Wi-Fi included – like the Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus.

The charging time is long – will take about three hours, before the battery will meet its energy resources (a complete charge has a face value of just 10 watts).

Actually, we didn’t expect much from a tablet for $200. High performance, sturdy body and a good screen are the three principal features of the perfect budget tablet. In the case of the Chuwi HiPad we can say that the one and most important condition it matches exactly.

Perhaps the sturdy metal housing is the main advantage of this tablet. Thanks to the small thickness and dark red colour scheme, it looks much more expensive than it really is. The screen on the tablet also much better than usual for the money – especially for color rendering and contrast.

Performance – this is where HiPad comes on the same rake. Even such simple actions like scrolling pages or app launch is accompanied by setbacks and delays, which are devices of medium and flagship level, you will never see. It is here that the whole cost model is shown in all its “glory”. Other disadvantages – bad camera, bad speaker and slow charging is a lot easier to swallow considering the price. But a higher performance tablet, of course, does not interfere – at least in order not to scare off buyers. However, for watching videos in FullHD and a leisurely flip through the pages in the Internet model it is come, and the bigger the target audience is usually not necessary.

Display this tablet was much better than expected in this price range. The overall attractiveness of the model spoils periodically freezes the UI and apps.
